I do not accept HMO or Medicare insurance plans.
Insurance plans have restrictions and limitations. For example, most plans will not pay for counseling services without a mental health diagnosis. This includes couples and family counseling.
If you are concerned about privacy and treatment autonomy, let’s talk about possible private pay options.
New Clients
-
All prospective clients must schedule a 15-minute consultation.
During your consultation, we will discuss availability, fees, and insurance.
However, I leave the remainder of the consultation open to you. This is your time to ask any questions and talk about any issues or concerns. It is also an opportunity for you to see if I’m a good fit for you.
If we decide to move forward, we will schedule your initial assessment. You will receive intake and insurance paperwork that must be completed 48 hours prior to your first appointment.
-
• Our first session is an intake assessment.
• All intake and insurance forms must be completed 48 hours prior to your scheduled intake assessment. If all intake and insurance forms are not competed 48 hours prior to intake assessment, your appointment will be cancelled. Your intake session may be rescheduled once the intake paperwork is complete.
• During the intake assessment, I will gather some history. We will also talk about your goals and treatment options in more detail. It will look much different than our counseling sessions.
• This intake assessment may last longer than the traditional 50 minute session. I want to make sure that you have all the time you need and that we start off on solid footing.
-
A traditional therapy session is approximately 50 minutes. However, sessions may be shorter and longer, depending on multiple factors. Couple, family and EMDR sessions often extend beyond 50 minutes.
The typical length of therapy is 8-16 weeks. There may be a need to extend therapy beyond 16 weeks. And, some clients remain in treatment for an extended amount of time.
Online Counseling
-
Teletherapy is counseling delivered through secure web-based video conferencing.
-
You will need access to a smart phone or computer with camera access and a strong internet connection.
I will send you a link to join the secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy room prior to session.
It is very important that you treat our time together like a traditional counseling session in terms of time, space, and privacy.
-
Therapy sessions are approximately 50-minutes and typically occur once a week. The initial intake assessment - as well as couple, family, and EMDR sessions - may last longer.
A typical session involves a check-in about the week, space to process your thoughts and emotions and an opportunity to learn or practice a new skill.
-
I use a HIPAA compliant platform. I also ensure that your sessions are private on my end.
Although, you may be in a familiar or non-traditional therapy environment, it is important that we maintain similar boundaries to in-person care in terms of privacy, space, and scheduling. One way to help ensure this is to find a private space for our sessions. Earbuds also help ensure privacy.
I will not provide or continue therapy when there is a violation of privacy or safety - this includes logging on while in a moving vehicle, in a situation where non-participating persons are present, or if the session is being recorded.
-
You can log onto the session from any place that has a good internet connection within Texas, Nevada, or California.
Again, I ask that you treat our time together like a traditional counseling session in terms of time, space, and privacy. I want you to get the most benefit out of our time together. I have found that multi-tasking does not work when it comes to teletherapy.
-
Online therapy is flexible and convenient. You can log onto a session anywhere you have a good internet connection and privacy. Some of the benefits of online counseling include:
Convenience. Counseling is delivered in the comfort of your own home with no time loss for traffic, transportation problems, or mobility issues. You don’t have to drive through rain-soaked streets or miss a session due to ice, roadwork, or car repair. And, you don’t have to miss out on work or family responsibilities, especially when there are many demands on your time.
Privacy. You will not bump into anyone you know leaving or entering the counseling office. During the session, I am alone in the room and use earphones so that you’re not overheard by anyone else. And all communications (video, email, text) are HIPAA secure.
Choice. Your choice of therapist is not limited by your location, unpredictable schedule, physical challenges, etc. I offer teletherapy to anyone living in Texas, Nevada, or California.
Comfort. During your online therapy session, you can be in any space where you feel comfortable. You can have your coffee/tea beside you and you can look out of the window at a reassuringly familiar view. After a therapy session, people may sometimes feel a sense of heightened sensitivity or emotional fragility. With online therapy you don’t have to worry about having to go out in public to get home after a particularly intense session Lastly, online therapy can seem more comfortable or easier than talking to someone in person, especially when revealing personal or private information.
Cost Savings. You don’t have the added expense of gas or babysitting services.
-
Teletherapy does come with some challenges.
It may feel awkward in the beginning.
Effectively engaging in teletherapy requires some skill and comfortability with technology.
It can be more difficult to accurately perceive nonverbal communication and subtle changes in mood and experiencing.
An unreliable internet connection can disrupt the session
Some people are uncomfortable seeing themselves on camera. Unfortunately, it is necessary that you keep your camera on during the session. You may minimize your screen for your comfort, but I do need to see you during our session. It is important that we maintain similar protocols as in-person treatment during our telehealth sessions, and this includes me being able to see you.
However, with good communication, we can mitigate many of these challenges.
-
No.
Online counseling is not appropriate for everyone. If you are experiencing an acute mental health challenge that requires more intensive intervention and stabilization, online counseling is not appropriate. This is not a crisis based clinical service.
Policies
-
Cancellation Fee: $25.00
This time has been reserved for you. Accordingly, you may be charged for sessions that are not cancelled 24 hours prior to the scheduled time.
-
Yes.
If you and your partner decide to have individual sessions as part of couples counseling, what you say in those individual sessions will be considered part of the couples counseling, and may be discussed in our joint sessions.
Do not tell me anything that you wish to be kept secret from your partner. I will remind you of this policy before beginning such individual sessions.
-
If at any time while we are engaging in teletherapy, I determine, at my sole discretion, that teletherapy is no longer an appropriate form of treatment for you, we will discuss referrals to another professional in your location who can provide appropriate services.
