Brain Injury

  • American Stroke Association. Information about preventing stroke, stoke warning signs and resources for people who have had a stroke and their caregivers.

  • BIND (Brain Injury Network of Dallas). A nonprofit group providing support to adults with brain injury so they can reconnect with their community and workplace. BIND follows a clubhouse model for rehabilitation and is the only program of its kind in Texas.

  • Brainline. Information for caregivers, professionals and veterans.

  • Caregiver Action Network (CAN). Nonprofit organization devoted to providing support to families and caregivers at no cost.

  • Children’s Hemiplegia and Stroke Association. Help for children who have survived an early brain injury that causes weakness on one side of the body.

  • Complex Child. Monthly online magazine written by parents of children with healthcare needs and disabilities.

  • Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services - Texas. CRS assists eligible people who have a traumatic brain injury (TBI), traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), or both, function independently in their home and community. Services can be related to communication, mobility and self-care.

  • Hope After Brain Injury. Located within DFW (Texas). Christian/Faith Based Service. Education. Connection. Support.

  • The ARC. Home and community-based services for people with disabilities.

  • Office of Acquired Brain Injury - Texas. Resources and Education for Texans.

  • Team Luke Hope for Minds. A nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children with a brain injury and providing hope for their families through support and education. Families who qualify can receive financial help for items such as therapies, treatments and equipment. Team Luke Hope for Minds serves children 18 and younger. Call 512-845-1466.

  • Texas Brain Injury Alliance. Texas-wide community of people with brain injuries, their families, friends and dedicated professionals.

  • Texas Brain Injury Programs Video. Information about Texas Brain Injury Resources from Texas Health and Human Services.

  • Texas Brain Injury Resource Guide. Comprehensive guide that includes basic information about brain injury, resources and support.

  • Texas Vocational Rehabilitation. The Vocational Rehabilitation program helps people with disabilities prepare for, find or retain employment.

Child Development and Parenting

  • Children with Special Health Care Needs Services Program. Helps children with their medical care, mental health care, special therapies and much more. Call 800-252-8023 or email cshcn@hhsc.state.tx.us to learn more.

  • Early Childhood Intervention. Help for families with children birth to 36 months, with developmental delays, disabilities or certain medical conditions. Find information on developmental milestones, and learn how to make a referral on their website, with or without a doctor’s recommendation. Call 877-787-8999, select a language, then select Option 3.

  • Mindsight Institute | Dan Siegel. Educational organization offering online learning and in-person workshops that focus on the interface of relationships and biological processes.

  • Navigate Life Texas. Resources and support for families raising children with disabilities in Texas.

  • Lives in the Balance. Evidence-Based Model of Care: Different Lenses, Different Practices, Different Outcomes. Help kids solve the problems that are causing their concerning behavior…without shame, blame, or conflict.

  • TBRI: TCU | Karen Purvis Institute of Child Development. A research-based, holistic model developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross to deepen understanding about the complex needs of these children and how to help them overcome social, behavioral, and emotional challenges. No clinical services.

  • Covid-19 Grief Network. Undoing isolation for young adults grieving the death of someone close to COVID-19.

  • The Dougy Center For Grieving. Support, resources, and connection before and after a death.

  • Hospice and Community Care. On-Line Resources for Grief - on-line video library, handouts for different types of grief, and much more.

  • MISS Foundation. Grieving the Loss of a Child. Advocacy information, research on traumatic grief, education, and support services for those grieving the death, or impending death, of a child.

  • National Alliance for Children’s Grief. Children and Grief. A nonprofit organization that raises awareness about the needs of children and teens who are grieving a death. Provides education and resources for anyone who supports them.

  • Open to Hope. A non-profit with the mission of helping people find hope after loss. Read, listen and share your stories of hope and compassion.

  • The Dinner Party. Support for young adults experiencing a loss with the mission of transforming the hardest conversations and most isolating experiences into sources of community support, candid conversation, and forward movement using the age old practices of gathering and breaking bread. LGBTQ+

  • The Trevor Project - Saving LGBTQ Lives. (866) 488-7386. Information & support to LGBTQ+ young people 24/7, all year round.

  • Trans Lifeline. (877) 565-8860. Peer Support. Trans Lifeline provides trans peer support for the trans community that is divested from police. It is run by and for trans people.

  • Trans-Cendence International - Education and advocacy for transgender, gender diverse, Family, friends & allies. Virtual meetings and support groups are available.

  • PFLAG - Family and Ally Support. First and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies. PFLAG is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed.

Mental Health & Substance Abuse

PTSD and Trauma

  • National Center for PTSD (Veterans). Advancing the clinical care and social welfare of America's Veterans and others who have experienced trauma, or who suffer from PTSD, through research, education, and training in the science, diagnosis, and treatment of PTSD and stress-related disorders.

  • The Gift From Within - International nonprofit organization dedicated to those who suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), those at risk for PTSD, and those who care for traumatized individuals through educational material, videotapes, articles, books, peer support, and other resources.

  • Sidran Institute - Nonprofit organization that helps people understand, recover from, and treat traumatic stress (including PTSD), dissociative disorders, and co-occurring issues, such as addictions, self injury, and suicidality.

Veterans

  • Give an Hour: Free Mental Health Services for Veterans & Families

  • Mental Health Programs in Texas for Veterans. HHSC and the Texas Veterans Commission partner to administer the Mental Health Program for Veterans, which provides peer-to-peer counseling to service members, veterans and their families through local mental health authorities and local behavioral health authorities across the state.

  • Military Veteran Peer Network. Connects veterans in need directly to local services throughout Texas.

  • Texas Veterans Commission. Provides disabled U.S. veterans residing in Texas with a variety of support services, including disability grants if you lost mobility during service or VA-provided medical attention. Call 512-463-5538 or 800-252-8387.

  • Texas Veterans Portal. Connects veterans, their families and caregivers to the benefits and services earned through their military service.
